Karley Houston

karley HoustonKarley Houston was born in Torrance, California and was raised in Los Angeles. Her love of music was cultivated and developed by her father, who had a passion for country music. Karley's love of country music developed and grew through her childhood. To Karley, country music is the art of putting real life experience and encounters to music. It represents real life in music form.

At the age of three Karley would pick up anything that resembled a mic and begin to sign. Usually the coffee table was her stage and this continued until her teen years. At the age of twelve Karley relocated with her family to Louisiana. It was there, in a rural area, that she learned the values of hard work and discipline. During her school years in Louisiana, Karley's spare time revolved around music and sports. She was an avid basketball player and aspiring singer. While living in Louisiana, Karley began entering talent competitions, showcasing her talents whenever possible, and received several awards and trophies. It was during this time she became determined to become a professional singer/songwriter. In these early years of her career she gained a tremendous amount of confidence and experience by singing at every opportunity.

In her late teens, Karley's family moved back to Los Angeles. It was there that her diverse singing career began to materialize. At eighteen she recorded her first album. Karley then began performing at many well-known nightclubs such as The Roxy, The Troubadour, and The Whiskey A Go-Go, all the while gaining experience and developing her abilities. Through her club performances she gained exposure in the music industry, thereby setting the stage for the pursuit of her dream. She also expanded her career by performing as a dancer in music videos with artists including "Lover Boy", "ThereAfter", and "Supertramp". Through her first manager, Fred Allen Murphy, she also had the honor of obtaining guidance from Natalie Cole, and also worked some with Chaka Kahn. In the late 1980's Karley moved to Texas where she once again was exposed to the traditional country music sound she and her father loved so much. Her passion for country music was on fire by then. She began singing with local Houston bands gaining even more exposure, she realized she had a natural knack for performing and an awesome stage presence. In 1991 Karley moved to San Antonio, Texas and sang with a local country band known as "Boys Night Out", including several Sunday night jam sessions that included many musicians like Rondal Huckaby, keyboardist for George Strait, Jim Loessberg, and Bobby Flores. While with "Boys Night Out", she had the chance to open for yet another established artist, Darrell McCall. Karley has continued to develop her talents by working with an award winning voice coach by the name of Mady Kay, performing live at every opportunity, and continuing to write. One of her songs, "Life's Gone Good", was placed on hold by Kathy Mattea, which helped Karley become a member of BMI and ASCAP.

In 1998 Karley met Clay Blaker, an accomplished songwriter for many well-known artists such as George Strait, Barbara Streisand and Clay Walker. Clay produced Karley's first country demo for a pitch to Nashville. As an unsigned artist, she immediately began receiving pitches for songs from publishers such as Island Bound and Kicking Bird. In that time she met artists like Deryl Dodd and Ray Benson of "Asleep at the Wheel", thus, heightening her confidence of her place in the music industry. Karley's ambition, hard work and diversity have been seen and recognized by established artists and family alike.

This album, which was produced by Bobby Flores, was Karley's dream. They co-wrote one of the songs together and both worked closely with Tommy Detamore (Cherry Ridge Studio) over several years to accomplish this recording. She had also recently been signed to the Yellow Rose Records label. She had been working on this album for several years but tragically did not live to see it's release. Some of the proceeds of the CD sales will go to benefit the American Cancer Society in the hopes of helping others. Driven by the love of family and music Karley has left us all a great contribution to country music.
